The Importance of Hiring a professional Photographer for your Sikh Wedding

A Sikh wedding, also known as Anand Karaj, is a sacred and joyous ceremony that involves various customs and rituals. The wedding usually takes place during the day and involves the following key components:

  1. Milni: This is a formal introduction between the families of the bride and groom. The fathers of the bride and groom exchange garlands, followed by other family members.

  2. Anand Karaj Ceremony: The actual wedding ceremony takes place in a Gurudwara, which is the Sikh place of worship. The bride and groom sit in front of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs, while the Granthi (the Sikh priest) recites prayers and hymns. The couple takes four rounds of the Guru Granth Sahib while the wedding party sings hymns.

  3. Laavan Phere: This is the most important part of the wedding ceremony. The bride and groom take four rounds around the Guru Granth Sahib while the Granthi recites the four stanzas of the Laavan, which symbolize the stages of married life.

  4. Ardas and Hukamnama: The wedding ceremony concludes with the Ardas, a prayer that seeks blessings for the couple, and the Hukamnama, a random reading from the Guru Granth Sahib that serves as a guidance for the couple.

  5. Langar: After the ceremony, a vegetarian meal known as Langar is served to all the guests. It is a tradition that symbolizes equality and community service.

  6. Doli: The bride leaves her parental home and heads to her new home with her husband. The brothers and cousins of the bride playfully demand a monetary tribute from the groom in exchange for allowing the bride to leave.

Sikh or Punjabi weddings are characterized by their simplicity and emphasis on equality, community, and devotion to the divine. The wedding ceremony is a celebration of the union of two souls and is considered to be a sacred and joyous occasion.
